A third of 18- to 25-year olds have admitted not taking out any travel insurance at all, despite the fact that nearly half of 18- to 20-year olds go on holiday three times a year.
In total, over 4.6 million travellers say they never take out travel insurance.
Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager, from Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "It is a concern to see that many younger people are going abroad without insurance, especially as they are travelling so far and so frequently.
"Ironically this generation are more likely to be tempted to bungee jump or go off the beaten track and therefore should be thinking more about the need for insurance.
She added that it could be "disastrous" to visit the US, for example, without travel insurance: the cost of sending a patient home with merely a broken leg could cost over $18,000.
"We would advise anyone planning to go away to take an annual multi-trip policy that provides comprehensive cover and cover for impromptu breaks away," she concluded.
Halifax Travel Insurance offers a number of travel insurance options, including annual multi-trip, "world explorer" for backpackers and single trip options.
