Phil Stevenson, chartered financial planner at Ark Financial Planning, said savers can make the most of their situation by ensuring they exercise the open market option, but in order to do this, they need to receive the right advice along the way.
He commented: "[Pension values have fallen] for a number of reasons, falling stock markets, falling annuity rates, [an] increase in longevity. Pensions have been battered from a number of different sources."
Mr Stevenson added that annuity rates should hopefully stabilise in the years ahead as the issue of longevity is tackled by the markets.
According to Alan Smith, chief executive at Capital Assessment Management, Brits are being been urged to put as much money as they can into savings and investments while they are still earning in order to better fund themselves when they get to retirement age.
