Winter tyres 'will not impact insurance cover'

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has moved to reassure UK motorists that fitting winter tyres to their vehicles will not impact on their car insurance policies.

Individuals who take steps to make their vehicles safer in the winter months will not be penalised by insurance providers, as long as they take the necessary steps to meet the vehicle manufacturers' specifications.

ABI director of general insurance Nick Starling commented: "Last year, cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists."

He added that it is important people stay safe during the winter and fitting suitable tyres can be one way to do this.

James Carnduff from Admiral recently noted darker nights, treacherous weather and slippery road surfaces all play a part in increasing accident rates during the winter months.

Therefore, motorists must be extra vigilant when getting behind the wheel at this time of year.
