Funds 'looking to invest in infrastructure'

Pension funds across the UK are looking to put more of their assets into infrastructure over the coming years, a sector expert has revealed.

Joanne Segars, chief executive officer of the National Association of Pension Funds, told listeners to the BBC's On The Money podcast that the government hopes to see between £15-20 billion of additional investment in this area, but is still too early to commit to this figure.

She commented: "What pension funds want to be able to do is to put more of their assets into infrastructure because that is a good match for the liabilities that they are holding."

Indeed, Ms Segars added there is likely to be a shift away from equities, stocks and shares, and government bonds as a result.

Furthermore, Tom McPhail, head of pensions research at Hargreaves Lansdown, recently argued that with the incoming pensions auto-enrolment scheme to get underway in 2012, individuals would be unwise to opt out of schemes that offer them additional savings for the future.
