Pension poverty levels 'set to increase'

The number of individuals suffering from "pension poverty" in the UK is set to increase over the coming years as the impact of tightening budgets stops more people from adequately saving towards their retirement.

UNISON's general secretary Dave Prentis said the switch from the retail price index to consumer price index is set to have a significant detrimental impact on UK pensioners, but the situation is likely to worsen as the gap between the two indices rises.

He commented: "The government must stop attacking pensions and come up with a fair deal - at the moment we do not have an offer we can put to a single worker."

Mr Prentis added that many older Brits are presently facing serious downturns in their pension provision.

Meanwhile, Phil Perry, advisor and director at Ark Financial Planning, recently argued that the present difficult financial period means Brits need to prioritise their monthly outgoings in order to provide for themselves both now and in the future.
