Homes 'vulnerable to damage' this winter

More than a third (40 per cent) of UK properties could be vulnerable to damage from the winter weather over the coming months, new research has shown.

A study by insurer Direct Line revealed frozen pipes and boiler breakdowns can be the biggest headaches for Brits.

Stuart Curson, head of Direct Line home insurance, commented: "As the last two winters have demonstrated, bad weather can cause serious damage to property as well as enormous stress to homeowners."

As a result, he advised keeping property well maintained and having essential home emergency cover in place.

The news follows recent calls from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) for UK homeowners to invest in proper insurance protection this winter.

Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance, noted property owners across the UK should rest assured that comprehensive home insurance policies will cover them against damage from bad weather this winter.
