Home insurance claims rise in January

Homeowners across the UK have had a tempestuous start to the new year, with the number of claims for damage to property as a result of the high winds and poor weather rising by 300 per cent this week.

According to figures from insurer Direct Line, strong winds and heavy downpours of rain have affected areas right across the UK over recent days, with the north of England and Scotland areas that have been particularly badly hit.

Stuart Curson, head of Direct Line home insurance, said: "Nearly half of all weather-related claims are due to roof damage. However, personal safety is paramount and if it is not safe to do so, do not attempt even temporary repairs."

Mr Curson also recently revealed more than a third (40 per cent) of UK properties could be vulnerable to damage from the winter weather over the coming months, with frozen pipes and broken boilers likely to be the biggest headaches for Brits over the coming months.
