Auto-renewal 'not the best bet for motorists'

Individuals coming to the end of the term for their car insurance policy have been advised that allowing insurers to carry out an auto-renewal of their deal is often one of the least competitive options in terms of insurance for the coming year.

Scott Kelly, head of car insurance at Gocompare.com, said: "Motorists should never let their insurer roll over their policy for another year without first checking that their new premium is competitive."

He added that unfortunately, not doing anything will more than likely be in the best interests of the insurer rather than the customer and that is why it is important for people to be proactive about finding the best deal on their cover in the present financial climate.

The news follows reports last month that the level of insurance fraud spikes during the run-up to the festive period, as a proportion of unscrupulous Brits cash in false claims at this time of year in order to boost their own coffers before Christmas.

However, this practice has a significant impact on the industry and serves to push up premiums for all motorists.
