Bradford & Bingley urges Glastonbury fans to take out insurance

The average festival-goer could leave £1,000 worth of possessions unattended, and in many cases uninsured, at music festivals this summer, according to a new report.

This could amount to £110 million in total.

Bradford & Bingley has calculated that the popularity of iPods, mobile phones and digital cameras in addition to traditional essentials like tents, sleeping bags, camping stoves and sunglasses means that an average festival-goer now carries over a £1,000 worth of possessions.

Nigel Asplin, general insurance director for Bradford & Bingley, commented: "It is crucial that you check your policies, otherwise there is a real danger that you could be rocked when you don't have the cover you thought. The relaxed approach we often adopt towards protecting our personal property is worrying."

One of the biggest problems for consumers is standard home contents insurance usually provides cover only while in the home so when possessions are lost, damaged or stolen at a music festival, then you are not covered unless you have made specific arrangements to insure them.

Festival-goers are therefore advised to check with their insurers before leaving and should not make the assumption that their possessions are covered outside of the home.
