High street banks 'face more complaints'

The number of complaints being faced by high street banks has increased over the last year, it has been revealed.

New figures from the Financial Ombudsman have highlighted significant increases between 2010 and 2011, with the worst offenders being Royal Bank of Scotland (161 per cent increase), Barclays (up 111 per cent) and NatWest (up 100 per cent).

Johanna Gornitzki, editor of Moneywise, commented: "Across all the categories of our survey the biggest banks were consistently rated worse than other organisations, such as building societies, for their service."

She added that call centre services were ranked particularly poorly for the banking sector and that firms are going to have to "up their game" if they do not wish to start losing custom.

Meanwhile, the Finance & Leasing Association has announced the release of its latest updated Lending Code, which aims to provide additional protection to borrowers and to reinforce the need for responsible lending among operators.
