Savers bank on building societies

New figures from the Building Societies Association show that more and more customers are banking their savings with building societies.

In flows into building society savings were up this year to £796 in May 2005, up from £475 million in May the previous year. Net receipts into cash ISAs were also up, to £295 million.

With an increase in savings, the Building Societies Association said that building societies had also seen a down turn in the amount of loans and advances made to customers. Net advances were down to £1,070 million in May, compared with £1,301 million the previous year.

"Savings inflows were strong in May, with the net figure well up that recorded a year ago. Inflows may have been boosted by a prolonged ISA season and people still choosing the relatively low risk option of cash savings over the stock market," said Adrian Cole, director-general of the Building Societies Association.
