Callcredit issues guidance for people moving home

Credit reference agency Callcredit has given out guidance to people moving house in a bid to help them protect themselves from identity fraud and being refused credit.

Homeowners who do not check their credit file before they move could be at risk from identify fraud and credit refusal resulting from a lack of name on the electoral roll, Callcredit has warned.

Callcredit director Alison Nicholson said: "Moving house is a stressful enough time as it is. People don't want to leave themselves open to identity fraud for the sake of some simple administration of their credit file.

"Nor do they want to find they're unable to buy the unexpected things they need for their new home because they haven't done something as simple as register at their new address."

People are therefore advised to check their credit file online, inform lenders of unused credit facilities that can be closed, register on the electoral roll immediately and inform all lenders of a change of address.

The advice comes as official figures show that the second and third quarter are the most popular times for moving house, with 51.8 per cent of moves taking place between April and September.
