Halifax reveals kids keen on internet shopping

Over half of all children aged between seven and 16 say they have shopped and bought online at some point in the past.

Compared with just a year ago that figure has already risen by ten per cent, from 43 to 53 per cent.

The keenest cyber-surfers are boys, with 60 per cent admitting they have made an online purchase compared with just 46 per cent of girls.

"We are not only seeing the emergence of a generation of young consumers, but also keen cyber-consumers," commented the head of savings at Halifax, Cheryl Millington.

She feels that with technology growing as fast as it is, "Children often lead the way in internet use within the family home".

However, she also pointed out that parents should ensure that their children remain safe while shopping online.

Other findings showed that Scotland is the centre for internet kids – 80 per cent of children who live there say they have bough over the internet.

At the other end of the scale is the East Midlands where only 36 per cent of computer-savvy kids have made online transactions.

The majority buy CDs, computer games or DVDs and 61 per cent say shopping online is more enjoyable than actually braving the high streets.
