Norwich Union Motor Insurance found that almost 75 per cent of those surveyed admitted they found it difficult driving while wearing the summer-time footwear.
However, almost 25 per cent of those questioned said they wore flip-flops regularly while driving.
And though they are the perfect choice for pretty feet, Craig Martin, motor marketing manager at Norwich Union, said: "Being in control of your car when driving is essential, especially in an emergency. However, many of us are ignoring safety advice when it comes to the shoes we wear when driving."
He added that the sole could become caught under the pedal, while the lack of ankle support could result in the foot slipping off the pedal completely – with potential serious consequences.
Norwich Union is thus urging motorists, especially female ones, to be careful when driving with flip-flops, but better yet, avoiding them altogether and keeping a spare pair of shoes in the car for driving.
