Homeowners warned to remain vigilant

More than half of UK homeowners (59 per cent) now go on holiday more frequently than they did five years ago, but many are still leaving their homes vulnerable to theft, a new survey indicates.

New research suggests that nine per cent of Britons jet off more than six times a year, but one in five of the homeowners polled said that they had returned from holiday to find that they have been burgled.

The report by Zurich suggests that one in five (19 per cent) homeowners have gadgets like security lights and burglar alarms but forget to use them, ten per cent have left a door or window open or unlocked whilst on holiday. One in 20 (five per cent) of Brits have allowed newspapers to pile up on their doorsteps, signaling to burglars that they are not at home.

The home insurer says that its average claim for domestic burglary is £1,875, making a total of £1.8 billion in claims over England and Wales. Homeowners are advised to cancel milk and newspaper deliveries before they go away and to implement extra security measures, such as burglar alarms and security lighting to deter thieves.

Maria Donald, spokesperson for Zurich Insurance, says: "Holidays, these days are often organised at short notice and last minute deals are great value. However, as a result it's easy to get complacent or to simply forget to put the necessary security measures in place. Burglars are all too often on the lookout for empty properties, and will go to great lengths to find them."
