Backbenchers threaten to rebel over pensions

LONDON, UK - MP's are threatening to defy government whips over the Pensions Bill and fight for workers “robbed” of their pensions.

Over 140 Labour backbenchers are demanding that the government compensates not just workers affected after 2005 - but also those who have already lost out.

They have tabled an amendment demanding retrospective compensation - threatening the government with defeat.

The motion says that ministers have “a moral, and possibly legal, obligation to help those workers who have been stripped of their pensions through no fault of their own”.

The rebel MP's are confident that a trade union action in the European Court of Justice will force the government to capitulate

One of the MPs, Frank Field, has already proposed introducing a levy on £15 billion of unclaimed assets held in banks and building societies to fund any compensation claim.

Mr Field told the Daily Post: “The fight goes on to make sure this compensation package is retrospective. MPs protecting their own pensions will have to be thick-skinned not to vote to save other people's.”
