Halifax Pet Insurance: millions spent on pet presents

British pet owners are poised to spend more than £400 million on Christmas presents for their animal friends this year, according to new research from Halifax Pet Insurance.

The survey showed that people spend an average of £35 on their pets at Christmas, with over 400,000 households spending over £100 – much of it on toys.

Over half of those asked said that toys were their prime pet present, followed by food at 23 per cent and jewellery at five per cent.

Some more exotic gifts for pampered pets include perfume, DVDs and advent calendars.

Frances Wright at Halifax Pet Insurance said: "Britons' love affair with their pets is clearly demonstrated by the number of owners that are planning to play santa paws this Christmas season."

However, Halifax said that only 15 per cent of owners have pet insurance and encouraged owners to ensure that they are covered before they invest in expensive presents.
