Tesco Car Insurance says industry needs to get fair

Same-sex couples should have an equal right to good motor coverage, Tesco Car Insurance said today.

Most insurers judge married couples as safer and offer them discounts while sometimes not giving similar deals to same-sex couples, the company said.

Tesco Car Insurance called on insurers to take notice of the new Civil Partnerships Act, which gives same-sex couples rights that were previously confined to married people.

Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco, said: "The Civil Partnerships Act redresses an imbalance in equality. The whole motor insurance industry must make sure it has done the same."

He added that Tesco Car Insurance was pleased that many insurers had started applying the same preferential ratings to same-sex and married couples in recent years.
