With many people now turning their thoughts to booking holidays after Christmas, the bank said that purchasing single cover often makes travellers pay more than they would do for an annual policy.
Karen Preston, Sainsbury's Bank travel insurance manager, said: "The beginning of the year is one of the busiest times for holiday booking. However, as people get excited about choosing where to go, they can often overlook the importance of choosing the right travel insurance policy."
She added that customers should consider whether they are going to make multiple trips abroad, since a "substantial saving" could be made by purchasing an annual policy.
The Sainsury's Bank travel insurance research indicates that around ten million people take more than two holiday breaks each year.
