Saga Home Insurance: Garages treasure troves for thieves

Saga Home Insurance is warning British homeowners to keep their garages locked to deter thieves.

New research from the insurer has found that one in five garage owners do not lock these at night, making them easy targets for thieves.

Furthermore, Britons are keeping valuable items in their garages, with one in seven of those surveyed saying they had over £3,000 worth of items in them.

Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga group, had some further advice: "It is well worth checking to see if your insurance cover has any limits on theft from outbuildings."

Saga Home Insurance has worked alongside the Home Office on the Let's Keep Crime Down campaign.

As part of the project, the insurer helped produce a guide, which is aimed at homeowners and gives advice on keeping homes and gardens secure.

Readers are also advised on how to security mark valuable items and how to cope with bogus callers.
