Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans "cheaper"

An Alliance & Leicester Personal Loan charges an interest rate of 6.1 per cent and the bank's survey reported an average dealer finance level of 12.8 per cent.
It was also claimed that 17 per cent of motorists take up an expensive offer with a car dealer and that drivers can waste up to £20,400 in a lifetime on such payment plans.
This is calculated based upon the average price of a car currently being about £12,000 and the average motorist buying 11 new cars over the course of their life.
Clare Alvey, personal loans manager at Alliance & Leicester, said: "Buying a car is a major purchase, and usually only second in expense to buying a house.
"Signing up to an interest rate of 12.8 per cent means that you are paying more than double the interest you would with an Alliance & Leicester loan at 6.1 per cent and you could also be wasting over £1,800."
The research was carried out on behalf of Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans by YouGov between February 9th and February 13th 2006.
