A 20 per cent reduction will be applied to many life cover premiums for level term assurance and for decreasing term assurance a ten per cent decrease will take effect.
The process of applying for Nationwide Life Cover online has also been improved, with quick quotes now being available in less than a minute, according to the provider.
Nationwide Life claims to offer a monthly insurance cost, based upon a 35-year old healthy couple taking out a joint Life Cover plan for a 25-year term, of £13.70.
This is cheaper than Sainsbury's Bank's offer of £14.10, Legal & General's of £14.29 and the £14.40 cost offered by Liverpool Victoria.
Robin Bailey, director of Nationwide, said: "Our new pricing brings down the cost of life cover as we can now demonstrate much better pricing than many of the banks and challenge the market leaders."
The changes in Nationwide Life Cover and Critical Illness products will only apply to new plans purchased after February 28th, existing customers' premiums will stay consistent.
