Tesco's study states that the new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which replaced the E111 facility in January, does not cover many aspects of medical care.
Ambulance repatriation, for example, whereby a traveller has to be flown home to receive hospital attention, could cost up to £20,000 and 75 per cent of Tesco's 1,200 survey respondents were unaware of this.
Some 2.5 million holidaymakers believe that they will not need travel insurance, according to the survey, particularly those who are just taking short breaks.
"Most people think that because a mini break is short, they don't need to insure themselves against accidents, thefts or cancellations. But our survey has shown that it is wise to do so," said Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco.
Tesco Instant Travel Insurance starts from a price of £8.99 for a three-day trip and covers most European destinations.
