AA Car Data Check: High value car buyers most at risk

The AA Car Data Check survey, which is conducted through Experian, has found that people who buy higher priced used cars at more at risk from fraudsters than those who go for a cheaper option.

Thos who buy a car for £10,000 or over are more at risk, according to the survey, because they are less likely to check the car's history before purchasing it, despite the one in three chance of buying a car with a hidden history.

This could involve things such as outstanding finance, a previous write-off or stolen markers.

Only 17 per cent of car history checks are carried out by buyers of vehicles costing more than £10,000, according to the AA Car Data Check survey.

Some 62 per cent of motorists who buy a car for between £2,000 and £5,000, however, are likely to consider the history of what they are buying.

"Buying a used car is risky and not enough people are aware of the issues or take the necessary precautions," said Rob Whalley, managing director of Experian's automotive division.

"The more money you spend on a car, the more important it becomes to carry out an AA Car Data Check."

Mr Whalley added that getting a car history check with the AA was a "small price to pay" in comparison to the possible cost of discovering hidden finance on a purchased vehicle.
