Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans could help mend a broken heart

The cost of starting again after a relationship break up could mount to £13,500, according to Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans.

Some 92 per cent of couples do not consider splitting up when making joint purchases, according to the company's research, and not choosing the right finance deal could lead to overpaying by £1,400.

One third of the survey's respondents said that they would only consider buying joint items if they were married and 47 per cent said they would do so if they were in a long-term relationship.

Almost two thirds of people have bought a bed together during a relationship, according to Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans, 55 per cent have purchased a car and 59 per cent have spent money on a fridge freezer.

Furthermore, if someone who has recently broken up with their partner takes out a loan to cover the expenses of starting again, they could pay up to £1,400 more than they need to if they don't take out a low rate option, Alliance & Leicester reports.

"Many people need to borrow money to help them start afresh and replace any items bought jointly which the other half has kept," said Clare Alvey, Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans manager.

"Splitting up is never going to be easy and in an attempt to 'move on' from the relationship it would be easy to choose the wrong deal."

Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans offers a typical annual percentage rate (APR) of 6.1 per cent on an amount of £13,500, which it claims amounts to £1,461 less in interest than the same sum from the Royal Bank of Scotland, which has a typical APR of 10.2 per cent.
