Legal & General Travel Insurance warns travellers over lost bags

Some 30 million bags checked in at airports worldwide do not arrive on time at the correct destination and 200,000 are stolen or lost, Legal & General Travel Insurance has reported.

A past survey by Legal & General has also stated that 52 per cent of respondents thought that the value of their luggage and belongings was less than £500 and another 23 per cent were unaware of the value of their possessions.

The insurer estimates that the average value of the baggage and contents of a family of four was £2,500 and asserted the importance of travellers checking the value of their possessions.

"Holidaymakers who unfortunately do lose their luggage may have insurance cover under the personal baggage section of their travel policy or the personal possessions section of their home insurance policy," said Garry Skelton, marketing director of Legal & General's general insurance business.

"They should check their cover before travelling and keep the details in their hand luggage."

The insurer claims that the personal possessions cover on a household contents policy will typically provide up to £3,000 of protection and most travel insurance policies will cover up to £1,500 for lost baggage.

Full details about the cover offered by Legal & General Travel Insurance can be found on the company's website.
