Couples who are renting together, however, do not have the same view, with 14 per cent saying that they would not be interested in buying their first house with their current partner.
Some 17 per cent of renting couples said they would prefer to buy a house on their own so they could keep the entirety of the profits from their property's future sale, the Alliance & Leicester Mortgages research shows.
"It seems that bricks and mortar are on the way to becoming the new marriage vows, with single people even wanting to delay buying their first property until they have found 'the one'," said Stephen Leonard, director of Alliance & Leicester Mortgages.
The survey also found that seven per cent of single FTBs would seek help from their family to get onto the property ladder and that men are three times as likely as women to buy their first property with a friend.
The research was carried on behalf of Alliance & Leicester by YouGov between February 24th and 27th among a representative sample of 2,410 adults in the UK.
