Saga Motor Insurance: One in seven Brits driving abroad illegally

Some one in seven British drivers who use cars outside the UK are driving illegally without proper insurance documents or a driving licence, according to Saga Motor Insurance.

On top of this, the company's survey states that 59 per cent of Britons have driven or been driven in Europe without having made the full preparations for doing so.

The study also reveals the fact that many UK drivers have encountered various problems while driving in a foreign country.

Almost a quarter of respondents said they found driving on the other side of the road an irritation, 15 per cent had problems with sharing the road with foreign drivers and almost a fifth admitted to finding it difficult to remember the correct way to drive round a roundabout.

"To limit the chances of getting into difficulty, people should plan their route before they leave and ask their passengers to navigate," said Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga.

"Driving licences and insurance documents are compulsory for driving abroad and should be the first thing you pack."

Saga Motor Insurance provides full cover when driving in the EU at no extra cost for an unlimited period, as well as personal belongings cover of up to £1,000 for any object carried in a vehicle that is lost or damaged following an accident, fire or theft.

The company also offers a guide to European motoring, details of which can be found on its website.
