These rejections are caused by the fact that when a transaction takes place in a foreign country, it is immediately referred to Barclaycard to check that it is not fraudulent.
Foreign retailers have consequently declined the card on occasion, causing significant inconvenience to cardholders.
With the Barclaycard Credit Card holiday alert service, customers can now inform Barclaycard of when they are travelling, where to and for how long to ensure that their card will be fully usable for this period of time.
"At Barclaycard we want to ensure that cardholders enjoy a hassle-free holiday," said Martin Warwick, head of card fraud operations at Barclaycard.
"The service launched today will mean that if a cardholder informs us about their travel plans, we can instruct our systems to process transactions from the cardholder's travel destination."
Other services available with Barclaycard Credit Cards include emergency replacement for lost cards and cash advances anywhere in the world, English speaking legal assistance and medical aid in emergencies.
There are a number of Barclaycard Credit Card offers available, including the Simplicity offer, which charges 6.8 per cent per year on every purchase and balance transfer made and the Platinum card, which has zero per cent interest on balance transfers for 12 months and a typical annual rate of 17.9 per cent.
