Halifax Travel Insurance: Brits dump billions at airports

Over £800 million worth of foreign currency has been 'dumped' at airports, according to new research by Halifax Travel Insurance.

Men were found to be doing most of the 'money dumping' as Halifax has termed the phenomenon whereby people spend money at airports just to use up their left over currency.

On average men were found to be spending £61 at an airport before returning from holiday compared with £37 being spent by women.

It is estimated that a further £163 million will be spent under such circumstances over the next 12 months as Halifax suggests the trend is set to continue.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Travel Insurance, commented: "It appears millions of holidaymakers are throwing away money that could have been invested in insurance to protect them during their trip, choosing instead to buy perfume, alcohol, food and souvenirs."

Travel insurance policy options from Halifax include multi-trip, single-trip and world explorer cover.
