More Than Home Insurance: Brits trust abused by 'non-residents' in their homes

As many as 1.7 million people in the UK are having their trust abused when allowing others to go unsupervised in their homes, according to new research by More Than Home Insurance.

Many homes are being damaged, food is being eaten and phone lines being used while homeowners trust window cleaners, builders and gas or electricity traders to do their work when they are not there.

Of those surveyed, one in seven said they had experienced incidents of this nature and three per cent believed they had had cash or personal belongings stolen by non-residents.

Craig Allen, home product manager for More Than, commented: "Long working hours, lengthy commutes and active social lives all contribute to a need to enlist help in and around the home.

"However, it would seem that we may have become too trusting in our attitudes to strangers."
