Halifax Pet Insurance issues heatwave warning

Pet owners need to be particularly vigilant during this week's heatwave, according to Halifax Pet Insurance.

Over 18 million people in the UK witness dogs getting hot under the collar as they sit in their owner's car and the advice from Halifax is to leave pets in cooler temperatures at home.

Being trapped in a car as it heats up during a sunny day presents a serious risk to canine health and while a third of those polled in a recent Halifax survey admitted they did not do anything when they saw a dog cooped up, 1.5 million decided to attempt a pet rescue.

Senior products manager at Halifax Pet Insurance, Mathew Long, said: "Under no circumstances is it acceptable to leave a pet unattended inside a car on a warm or even mild day."

"In a matter of minutes an animal can become distressed in these conditions and of course temperatures can quickly change," he added.

Halifax offers a five per cent discount on pet insurance policies bought online.
