Alliance & Leicester Mortgage study shows outlook for homebuyers

First time buyers face a deficit shortfall because they save less and expect more, according to new research released by Alliance & Leicester mortgages.

New research has suggested that while many people aim to save for two years before putting a deposit down on a new home, first time buyers often find themselves with a shortfall of around £5,000.

The difference between the amount that first time buyers would like to have and the amount they can save in two years was found to be significant.

Alliance & Leicester suggests that people either save more or save for longer before making a deposit payment.

Richard Taylor, head of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, commented: "To turn dreams into reality it's a good idea to plan and budget carefully – trying to cut back on luxury expenditure, like takeaways and expensive nights out, will all help to achieve their dream more quickly."

Alliance & Leicester also offers current accounts, personal loan and savings products.
