Brits ignore safe driving advice, says NatWest Car Insurance

Many drivers in the UK are ignoring road safety advice and driving carelessly, according to new accident research carried out by NatWest Car Insurance.

The survey found that while most people follow legal requirements such as not drink driving or talking on mobile phones while driving, less obvious but still dangerous activities are common.

Only 40 per cent of those surveyed said they do not eat while driving, 23 per cent of people said they had run out of petrol in their car and two per cent of drivers admitted to having fallen asleep during a traffic jam.

Bob Trinder, head of NatWest general insurance marketing, said: "Many accidents, road rage incidents and subsequent insurance claims could be avoided by simply adhering to rules such as staying two chevrons away from the car in front and not talking on a mobile phone whilst driving."

NatWest also offers home, life and travel insurance policies.
