Direct Line Insurance calls for rural speed limits to be dropped

Direct Line Insurance has called for the speed limits on the UK's rural roads to be reduced to 40mph, because of the high number of accidents which occur in the countryside every year.

The insurance provider has reported that 15,000 road accidents in rural areas annually result in fatalities, which represents around two thirds of the total for all roads.

Less traffic, fewer pedestrians and fewer police are believed to be the reasons behind the fact that of those surveyed by Direct Line, over a quarter admitted to driving over the 60mph speed limit.

Emma Holyer, Direct Line's Motor spokesperson, said: "The majority of motorists on the country roads in summer are likely to be unfamiliar with them and they can be extremely dangerous.

"We're calling on the government to reduce the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph as we feel the current speed limit is too fast for narrow rural lanes."

Direct Line offers a ten per cent discount to customers who make a motor insurance policy purchase online.
