Goods in the average Brits holiday bag are worth over £500 and yet they are frequently left on the sand when holiday makers go for a swim or to buy an ice cream.
This carelessness could mean easy pickings for thieves who can help themselves to mobile phones, watches or digital cameras, Norwich Union has warned.
Dawn McMullan, travel product manager at Norwich Union, said: "Our evidence suggests that the simple beach bag, once just for towels and sunscreen, has become a glamorous fashion accessory packed with expensive items which make them rich pickings for opportunist thieves."
"Holidaymakers also appear to be severely underestimating the value of their belongings, which means that if they do become a victim of theft, they could find themselves under-insured," he added.
Norwich Union is part of Aviva, the sixth-largest insurance group in the world, with 30 million customers around the world.
