Norwich Union releases new School Sums index

The total average cost of sending a child to state school from the age of five to 16 now costs over £14,000, compared to £10,000 four years ago, according to latest research.

Norwich Union's School Sums index reveals that in total, UK parents can expect to fork out £11.8 billion just in the 2006-7 school year on the everyday costs associated with education.

"Many parents think of state schools as being free but the costs are significant," explained Simon Quick from Norwich Union.

"Over £1,000 of parents money gets spent per child each year just covering the everyday costs of sending our children to school."

The index has found that the top three most expensive components of a child's schooling are transport, food and shoes.

Figures show that transport sets parents back a total of over £2.5 billion a year, with parents shelling out £2.4 billion a year on lunches and £618 million a year on shoes.

Other findings from the index reveal that over an average child's school lifetime parents will pay for 43 shirts or blouses, 48 pairs of trousers or skirts, 38 jumpers, 37 pairs of shoes and 33 school trips.

In the 11 years of schooling, parents can also expect to spend on average around 1,000 hours helping their children with homework.
