Manufacturing bosses predict job cuts

According to a survey conducted for the trade union, Amicus, over half of the UK's top one hundred manufacturing employers expect to make redundancies in 2004.

The poll found that 53 per cent of CEOs anticipate job cuts this year, but union representatives were more optimistic about manufacturing prospects.

Almost half (48 per cent) of senior shop stewards said they were “very” or “quite” optimistic about the economy compared to 32 per cent of CEOs.

But Derek Simpson, general secretary of Amicus, suggested that CEOs paint a more accurate picture of manufacturing prospects.

“These survey results explode the myth of top floor versus shop floor war and demonstrate a great deal of consensus between workers and bosses,” he said.

“However, shop stewards are clearly not as well informed on CEO plans for restructuring as they might be.”

The survey also revealed that the vast majority of CEOs and shop stewards were united in their views that pensions are an essential part of future planning for all involved in the industry.
