Legal & General says that Britons misjudge the cost of common medical treatments by over a third, undervaluing the financial benefit of the service provided by the NHS or through private medical insurance cover.
In a survey of over 5,000 people the insurance provider found that the cost of a hip replacement was underestimated by over £3,000, while the cost of a heart bypass was underestimated by over £7,000.
Tessa Webster, customer services director at Legal & General HealthCare said: "When you consider the amount of money Britons spend on staying healthy a year, over £1.25 billion on gym membership alone, you can see how highly we value our health.
"However, few are aware of the actual costs of treatment should they need an operation, which only the minority could afford if they were expected to pay it themselves."
She said that the NHS and private medical insurance do provide invaluable services, but for total peace of mind and quality service private health insurance can provide an affordable way to budget for the cost of treatment.
"Legal & General's new private medical insurance plan, HealthCare Choices, also comes with payment protection cover, which ensures that the premium for private medical cover is paid should you be unwell and so unable to work," she said.
