Sainsbury's Bank tackles ATM fraud

Sainsbury's Bank has announced that it is to invest a further £3.5 million in security around its 885 cash machines to tackle the growing problem of ATM fraud.

The bank's research shows that the value of cash machine fraud during the first three months of 2006 was £21.4 million, an increase of 54 per cent when compared with the corresponding figure in 2005.

Indeed between 2000 and 2005 the amount of money stolen through cash machine crime increased by a staggering 260 per cent, Sainsbury's says.

ATM skimming, which involves attaching a small electronic device to the card entry slot of a cash machine to record card details, accounts for the greatest proportion of cash machine fraud in the UK.

In response to the growing problem, Sainsbury's Bank has announced that it is to spend a further £3.5 million on installing more CCTV cameras and introducing new anti-skimming devices to crack down on cash machine crime.

Kevin Barrett, head of channels at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "ATM fraud is a growing problem and one that we take very seriously. We are committed to ensuring that through major investment in CCTV and new anti-skimming devices, our cash machines are among the safest in the country."
