Sainsbury’s Bank tackles cash machine fraud

Sainsbury’s Bank plans to invest a further £3.5 million to counteract cash machine fraud.

The firm's ATMs will now be watched by CCTV and have new anti-skimming technology installed to protect the customer’s card details from being swiped.

Between 1996 and 2005 cash machine fraud in the UK has increased by 37 per cent, mainly due to illegal skimming practices.

"ATM fraud is a growing problem and one that we take very seriously," said Kevin Barrett, head of channels at Sainsbury’s Bank.

"We are committed to ensuring that through major investment in CCTV and new anti-skimming devices, our cash machines are among the safest in the country."

A fraudster can insert a skimming device into the slot on an ATM and is able to scan any cards that are inserted.

Criminals sometimes jam one of two ATM machines and then offer assistance to customers by using the other machine. This can enable them to see a customer's pin number as it is typed in.
