Legal & General's Safety Uncovered Index reveals low theft stress

Despite being the most burgled nation in Europe, the vast majority of people are not concerned with the threat of break-ins, according to recent research by Legal & General.

Legal & General's Safety Uncovered Index asked a substantial representative sample of over 5,000 GB adults which crimes had caused them the most concern in the last three months.

It found that yob culture and anti-social behaviour are among Britain's top safety concerns, not burglary.

Indeed the latest findings from Legal & General's Safety Uncovered Index show that just 3 per cent of Brits worry about having their homes broken into. In contrast 23 per cent are concerned about anti-social behaviour in their area.

And it seems their concerns are valid, with 30 per cent of respondents claiming they had witnessed at least one act of anti-social behaviour in the past three months.

Elaine Parkes, technical services manager at Legal & General's General Insurance business, said: "Despite official Home Office figures suggesting crime is on the decrease, our research shows people still clearly feel we live in an increasingly unsafe environment – and it appears to be a growing yob culture upon which they're founding their fears."

Other crime worries that came above burglary in Legal & General's Safety Uncovered Index were identity theft, violent crime and vandalism.
