Barclays Student Possessions Insurance advised for those at uni

Students could benefit from taking out Barclays Student Possessions Insurance before the new university year starts in all seriousness, the insurer is advising.

Barclays claims that those aged between 16 and 24 are the most likely victims of burglary, making insurance "one of the absolute essentials for all students", according to the Barclays Insurance managing director, Mark Till.

However, with students being very busy in the first few days as freshers, many forget to even consider taking out insurance, Mr Till says.

What is more, many regard taking out insurance as an unnecessary extra expense, but he warns that students' possessions such as laptops and music players are of a high value. As a result, theft of these items could be financially devastating.

Mr Till explains: "Students have often had to work, save and borrow hard to afford their essential and luxury items but you never really realise just how much all of your possessions are worth until you actually have to replace them all."

He says insurance for students could cost anything from £2 a month. "This is a small price to pay compared to the costs they could be facing should the worst happen," he concludes.

Barclays Student Possessions Insurance offers cover for students living in halls of residence or shared houses.
