Tesco involved in card fraud row

Self service tills at Tesco supermarkets could be leaving customers out of pocket, according to Which?, the independent consumer charity watchdog.

Due to the self service tills at Tesco not requiring customers to input their pin details or sign for their purchases, it is feared that consumers risk losing thousands of pounds because of card fraud.

Tesco has introduced self service tills at around 200 of its stores across the UK and Which? has called on the supermarket giant to rid the system of this loophole before more customers find themselves out of pocket.

Researchers from Which? found that purchasing goods with stolen cards was a relatively easy operation as no security checks took place when making the transaction.

Editor of Which? Neil Fowler was critical of Tesco, stating: "It is hard to believe that the UK's biggest supermarket is making it so easy for criminals to use stolen credit cards in their stores. We think it is highly irresponsible.

"As a shop that prides itself on caring about its customers, we can only hope they close this obvious loophole and introduce standard security procedures in the very near future."

Tesco has announced half-year profits of £1.09 billion this week, which is an increase of 10.3 per cent.
