Flight diverted after bomb threat over US

NEW YORK, US - A Moroccan airliner travelling from New York's JFK Airport to Casablanca was diverted to Maine, following a bomb threat.

A US official said action was taken after a passenger made a bomb threat over US airspace.

"A passenger made a phone call to a family member and made a statement that included a bomb threat against the aircraft," a spokesman for the federal Transportation Safety Administration revealed.

The plane, Royal Air Maroc Flight 201, took off from JFK Airport at 19:00 EST (midnight GMT). It was diverted to Bangor International Airport in Maine shortly after take-off and taxied to a secure area.

All 82 passengers and ten crew were kept aboard the plane for about 90 minutes. The 767 was screened by law enforcement agents, who apparently found no explosive device on board.

The person who made the alleged bomb threat is being questioned by officials on site.
