Gossips costing billions says More Than

Gossiping in the office is costing the UK economy billions of pounds a year according to research undertaken by More Than.

The actual figure lost by UK businesses to gossiping stands at £43 billion which equates to an average of three hours a week of office gossip for every employee.

More Than, however, has been quick to laud the importance of banter in the workplace and 53 per cent of those surveyed expressed an appreciation for interaction with their work peers, citing it as helpful towards their role.

Head of More Than business Mike Bowman commented: "On the face of it, £43 billion a year is clearly a large amount, but in reality, a bit of office banter is hugely important for business.

"Not only is it essential for staff morale and keeping informed on social affairs, but it also helps office workers solve any problems they may have in their job and generate new ideas."

As a result, More Than has launched a website entitled mywatercooler.co.uk that aims to unite small UK businesses by providing the opportunity for owners and managers to contact each other.

The website entices like-minded business people to "swap business skills, knowledge and contacts".
