Property in market towns is more expensive

The UK's largest mortgage lender Halifax has announced the findings of new research, highlighting higher average house prices in market towns than their neighbours.

Research by the lender showed that a higher average property price can be found in 73 per cent of market towns over their neighbouring towns according to the Annual Halifax Market Town Review.

Allied to this, nearly three quarters of market towns in the UK have reported higher average growth in house prices than the English average over the last five years.

Colin Kemp, managing director at Halifax Estate Agents, stated: "Home buyers continue to be attracted to the high quality of life offered by market towns and are prepared to pay a premium to live there."

"Most market towns have higher house prices than other towns in their county and the majority have also seen stronger house price growth than the English average over the past five years," he concluded.

Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire is presently the UK's most expensive market town for property with an average price of £574,211. In second place is Winchcombe in Gloucestershire with a house price average of £324,717.

Halifax Estate Agents won the top award at the Estate Agent & Letting Agent of the Year Awards for the second year running in 2006.
