52-year Mortgage on offer

Mortgages are being offered for a term of at least 40 years by some lenders but Tesco personal finance offers the longest term at 52 years according to Money Expert.

Nearly a third of mortgage lenders are currently giving customers the option of borrowing for 40 years or beyond.

Allied to the fact that the length of mortgages is increasing, Abbey recently launched its five times salary mortgage, highlighting greater flexibility for customers.

Sean Gardner, MoneyExpert.com's chief executive, remarked: "The cost of the average home has doubled in the past five years making it more and more difficult for potential homeowners to buy a house."

"It makes sense that lenders are responding by offering greater flexibility to borrowers whether it is by allowing them to borrow more or by enabling to spread payments over a longer time," Mr Gardner continued.

He added that the traditional practice of offering a 25-year mortgage that was worth treble a persons salary was no longer applicable to today's mortgage market.
