An average total of £2,200.48 was spent and the insurer calculated that an 18-year-old who lives to reach the average life expectancy of 78.5 would end up spending a total of £133,129.04 during Christmas.
Presents account for the majority of the figure spent each festive season, with £693.05 going on gifts for loved ones, while £337.27 is used to get presents for friends.
Mark Bishop, spokesman for Cornhill Direct, stated: "Christmas is a time to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family, but the threat of burglary can't be ignored and householders must be more security conscious than normal.
"Our policy automatically increases the sum insured by 10 per cent during the Christmas period to cater for the Xmas spend."
The poll also found that a fifth of people in the UK are still attempting to pay off the money spent over Christmas by March of the following year.
With all that money being spent on presents, it is advisable that an adequate insurance policy is sought and Cornhill Direct offers a 40 per cent discount for those that have had no claims in the last four years.
