Children get £1.8 billion of presents, says Liverpool Victoria

Santa is certainly going to town this year, with parents spending £1.8 billion on Christmas gifts, according to Liverpool Victoria.

Mums and dads are forking out an average of £262 for each child, even though their little ones are only expecting £167 worth of gifts, Liverpool Victoria revealed.

Welsh children look set to be the most content this year, with parents in the region splashing out almost £600 on their youngsters.

"Given the excitement that all children feel about Christmas, it is perhaps surprising that their expectation of what will be spent on them is considerably less than their parents plan to spend," said Nigel Snell, Liverpool Victoria's corporate communications director.

"But whatever the spend, Christmas is an expensive time and saving a little and often throughout the year will help to pay off those yuletide bills."

Top treats being bought for boys this year include the Dr Who Cyberman Mask, Fast Talking Lightning McQueen and Deal or No Deal Board Game. The UK's girls are mostly hoping for a Bratz Forever Diamondz doll, a Baby Born with Magic Eyes or a Let's Dance Barbie Doll.
